Values & Mission

Our Core Christian Values

While we have members of varied theological views, the overall views of our church can best be characterized by the following statements of belief:

  • At Harrisena, we believe diversity is a blessing.
  • We believe that the message Jesus of Nazareth brought to humankind is as relevant today as it was 2,000+ years ago.
  • We believe that this message is one of healing and transforming love that breaks down barriers—a message of welcome, inclusion, equality, respect, forgiveness, and care for all people and the earth.
  • We believe that this message, rather than the particular institutions conveying it forms the most enduring foundation for a life well lived—in other words, a life lived in the divine image.
  • We believe that each of us is free to understand and worship God in our own ways.
  • We believe that faith is enriched by human reason, not in conflict with it.

As a church family, we are responsible for ministry to one another and to our community as well.

Our Congregation

Harrisena Community Church, located in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, serves a parish of approximately 250 families of diverse ages, backgrounds and incomes. Our combined attendance from two Sunday morning services is typically 120 congregants. The church enjoys a high level of volunteer support and participation in church operations from its members.

Our Community Outreach

Harrisena takes seriously its mission to reach out to the community in which it lives. Examples include open attendance for Adult Study, Summer Vacation Bible School and assistance with Family Services Association. Most members of our Youth Fellowship group are from the greater community. Our church buildings are used for numerous community events, including Alcoholics Anonymous, dance classes, musical events, luncheons, receptions and a blood mobile. We host community-based lecture series twice annually, including recently Bishop John Shelby Spong, Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, John Dominic Crossan and Philip Gulley.
